Actors call it "back-story": all the stuff that happened in the past, before the movie begins... Stuff that might explain how the character became what he or she is today.

It’s obvious why that might be fascinating to the actor playing the role (star Hugh Jackman has a producer credit here). But as for the rest of us, well, you have to figure the writer left it out for a reason.

These days we’re seeing a lot more “origin” stories as the studios milk each franchise for every last drop. You can be sure that someone at Twentieth Century Fox will be running the numbers on Monday with a view to fast-tracking a sequel to this prequel, as well as further putative episodes devoted to Jean Grey, Cyclops, Storm, Mystique and the rest of the class of X.

Cast details

It’s hard to get excited about the prospect. Wolverine exhibits all the overly-familiar hallmarks of the twenty first century comic book movie: an inflated sense of its own importance; turgid plotting; and action sequences designed to showcase lavish CGI effects.

In many ways it was the first X-Men back in 2000 that set the tone. On the one hand director Bryan Singer embedded an earnest allegory about prejudice and minority rights; on the other it was an FX geek’s wet dream – each mutant came with her or his own party-piece: one could shapeshift; another could levitate; yet another had a bad case of wind...

The mutants all shared the same nasty temper, but Logan/Wolverine (Jackman) had the shortest fuse – and the silliest haircut, a 50s “duck tail” with ferocious rockabilly sideburns. Predictably enough “Origins” devotes more time to exploring the roots of his anger issues than his hair, but it doesn’t worry about where his most distinctive genetic features might have come from – the retractable claws that spring from his knuckles when he’s irked, and his invulnerability to anything short of decapitation.

After a century of war-faring under Old Glory, Logan loses his taste for the vocation in Vietnam, and finally walks away in disgust from the elite mutant unit put together by Stryker (Danny Huston). But his brother Victor (Liev Schreiber) has other ideas, and knows how to get Wolverine to embrace his true, animalistic, nature.

Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber

Borrowing wholesale from The Incredible Hulk, with Schreiber fairly effective in the Abomination part, Wolverine struggles to establish an identity of its own. The two brothers charge at each other like medieval knights jousting, and Victor affects a dog-like, four-legged bound, but no matter how often he tries it, director Gavin Hood (Tsotsi) never works out how to make a fight between indestructible foes tense or exciting.

That’s the trouble with CG-enhanced action: what you gain in spectacle you lose in impact. Filmmakers today can engineer destruction on a scale that would have been unimaginable 20 or 30 years ago, but it’s all so much collateral damage. It’s rare, these days, for an American action movie to impart any genuine sense of pain, or hurt, or loss. Too much Wow, not enough Ow!

...the filmmakers will have to come up with some evolutionary changes soon if it's going to escape extinction.

In fairness, there are fleeting moments in Wolverine where we do feel Logan’s emotional anguish, but only as a prelude to his anger, which is the only quality an audience is likely to find interesting about him.

Serviceable, but inescapably redundant, this Wolverine movie does just enough to keep the X-Men franchise on life support, but the filmmakers will have to come up with some evolutionary changes soon if it’s going to escape extinction.

An improvement on The Last Stand

After Brett Ratner's dire The Last Stand fumbled the ball, Wolverine arrives with the future of the X-Men franchise resting on its shoulders. The result, something nowhere near Singers classy X2, yet just about good enough to be worth seeing.

Not being well versed in comic book lore, its tricky for me to judge its respect to the source material however Hugh Jackman is reliable (and hairy) as ever, even if he is hamstrung by a grumpy vengeance storyline, that forces him to be a moody git for most of the running time. Its much more fun to watch him making flippant quips and chomping cigars, but those moments are few and far between. Liev Schreiber's great as an unhinged (and even more hairy) Sabretooth, Dominic Monaghan's Bolt is interesting but sadly underused and I didn't think there would ever come a time that I would say this, but Ryan Reynolds is actually funny. I know, its shocking!

There are too many other cameos to list here and at times it just feels like watching a fan service conveyor-belt. Several potentially interesting people come and go without ever being explored and the wider context of a fragile, paranoid society on the brink of a culture war between mutants and humans, is not touched on at all. Its a straight action-revenge story that inspires no mulling of the bigger issues whatsoever.

It does at least all hang together. Its helps that it is bookended by a pulsating opening sequence that jumps between several historic battlefields and has a satisfyingly epic finale that neatly ties in with the first X-Men movie. I guess I was just hoping I might be able to engage my brain a little bit.

Thoroughly predictable. The excellent Hugh Jackman does his best, but is let down by a poor script. The action sequences are very good, but when the action stops the film drags. A nice cameo by Cyclops and some innovative mutant ideas.

  • Surprisingly and disappointingly average

Being a huge fan of X-men 1 & 2, I was desperately hoping this would live up to them. Or at least as good as X-men 3 or First Class - both still great movies but not in the same league as the first two. Unfortunately, this is the worst of the lot. I guess I've been spoilt by the previous movies, but this is just an average saturday night movie. There are too many dumb ideas, dumb moments and daft looking poses and acrobatics. I love fantasy but there were several bits in this that were so far-fetched they were just ridiculous. The whole thing had a real lack in quality control and even the superb Hugh Jackman as Wolverine couldn't save it. I wouldn't call it rubbish - it is still a decent enough movie for a bit of light entertainment, but it pales in comparison to X-men 2 and I'm really disappointed.

A really good story into the background of Wolverine and his roots. I like the introduction of new mutant characters from Marvel such as Deadpool although the mutants from the trilogy are terrific. Hugh Jackman is awesome in this film, i enjoyed it immensely...eventually.
