This is the episode that got me hooked on Doctor Who but one question, if it manipulates plastic why doesn't the Tupperware attack?

I fell in love with this show the moment I started watching it. I love the dynamics between Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper. It's great how they made it modern but have stuck to the classic show. I have watched this about 10 times and I keep on coming back to it!

  • Can Russell T Davies regenerate Doctor Who?

Let's get the bad points out of the way first. Several plot points of this episode felt tacky, badly done and frankly pointless. Why does Mickey become an Auton and how come Rose cannot realise the difference? It just seems lazy writing to get the Doctor to come in and save the day.

Whilst we are on the Doctor, Christopher Eccleston plays a much darker Doctor. One who has been made in the fires of the Time war and has little time for social endeavours. He still wants to save the planet but he seems to have very little time for its inhabitants. Rose, on the other hand, is more than just a sweet damsel in distress she comes from London and has a harder skin than the Doctor first believes. Billie Piper's energy and ability to talk on the Doctors's level brings a certain gravitas to the role than many companions from old-Who failed to master. Many being yes people and following the Doctor around blindly.

The script works to introduce the characters and show us this new world of Who. Whilst it does not portray the Autons as anything more than a nuisance it does get us ready to seeing a host plethora of aliens burst onto our screen. How the doctor defeats the Autons is too easy as well. with him having the ability to do so throughout the entire episode. Anti-Plastic anyone?

This episode does provide a solid framework on which to work on and while the story might be simple and fairly uninteresting the characters are not. This is a Doctor Who for a new generation, far darker and far more brutal. Russell T Davies has successfully resurrected this franchise and it is likely to still be here in twenty years time.
