Red Dwarf has been surrounded by five black holes and in order to navigate the minefield successfully Holly sends the crew away in the starbugs, with Lister and Rimmer ending up marooned on an icy planet.

This episode focuses on the relationship between Rimmer and Lister and provides perhaps the greatest insight into their relationship that we see throughout the run of the show. We learn about Lister's first time and Rimmer's belief that he was once, somehow, noble. (As Alexander the Great's chief Unic no less.)

Marooned ranks up there with the best Red Dwarf episodes and whilst the gags don't come thick and fast as they usually do we see real signs of brotherly love between Rimmer and Lister with Barrie and Charles showing the chemistry between them and their acting ability. In my opinion we see the show reach a new maturity as it breaks away from the norm to deliver an episode that pushes the characters to the front and lets them carry the show.

However if you are worried about having no laughs, fear no more, there are several notable gags in this episode such as the realisation about what the Black Holes actually were, Holly's broken siren call and Lister eating the dog food, because it's always going to taste better than a pot noodle.

Still, for this episode the gags seem near irrelevant what matters are these two characters. This is Red Dwarf as its best.
