YES! Viking Shield Wall!By Upshot (8 reviews) , 28 May 2013
[Highly rated reviewer]Great Series. But Just wanted to reply to the person lacking any knowledge in history but claims to know history with a disgusting comment.
The wall, (Scildweall or Bordweall in Old English, Skjaldborg in Old Norse) is a military tactic that was common in many cultures in the Pre-Early Modern warfare age. There were many slight variations of this tactic among these cultures, but in general, a shield wall was a 'wall of shields' formed by soldiers standing in formation shoulder to shoulder, holding their shields so that they abut or overlap. Each man benefits from the protection of his neighbour's shield, usually the man to his right, as well as his own.
The tactic was used at the Battle of Stamford Bridge, where the relatively well-armed Saxon army hit a Viking army unaware. The Vikings were not wearing any armour, and after a bloody shield-wall-versus-shield-wall battle, fled in panic. Both sides lost 5-6000 each but the numerical superiority of the English won the battle. Both sides at the Battle of Hastings are clearly visible in the Bayeux Tapestry using the tactic, though Norman mounted cavalry ultimately won the day -- portending the end of massed shields in combat. When two forces formed shield walls, they would often be at a standstill for hours.
In summary, the spartans did not create the 'SHIELD WALL' - wish to let me tell you why? It was a strategy that worked, and back then is not like today, it doesn't spread like A FASHIONABLE TREND! Different cultures, tribes and civilizations used it because it worked and it stopped them from dying.
Historically accurate? It isn't trying to be.
Fantasy tale? Not at all, this series does try to give little querks about the vikings that were true, such as them cleaning their faces and spitting/clearing nose into a wash bowl and sharing the same bowl to do this in a previous episode, but mr 'Doh Saxon Shield Wall Dumbass' has no idea what he is talking about.

A-Viking Shall We Go....By a customer , 13 Oct 2013The 'Vikings' did to the Sais/illegal German immigrants/'English' what they had done to us British so I really enjoy watching this series ;) Although not entirey historically accurate - and there are still many gaps in our knowledge of the early medieaval period - this is a very well put together production. The 'Spartans', more properly Lakedaimones, and other ancient Greek states used the 'phalanx' as their main infantry tactical formation. Although the two may appear similar at first look, they are different. If you are going to comment, you should really get your facts straight by reading some proper history, not basing your opinions on Hollywood fantasy extravaganzas!

Ragnar rocks!By Chriscdw (1 review) , 08 Oct 2013Four episodes in and I love it. Historical based fiction is my thing and if it's your's too then I thoroughly recommend watching this... and make sure you have plenty of time on your hands because it's one of those where you just want the next episode as soon as the last one has finished!
