The films were produced in the second world war , probably after pearl harbour , when the Nazis were universally condemned throughout the 'free' world. . I was interested in the film as I was 8 years old at the time and I need to understand the adult view of the horrors of the war which fortunately owing to my young age and loving family were not obvious to me.
However the film showed how we must be vigilant at all times of the manipulation of the film script . I have recently read an excellent account of Arnhem ( the best there is by Martin Middlebrook) ) which shows what a mitigated disaster it was but spun as a heroic moment in the military history of WW2 as exmplified in ' A Bridge too far' which only sowed General Model running away from the Hartenstein Hotel in Osterbrook where the main battle was fought and in no way gave him credit for the tactics he employed to defeat the airborne invasion from a cold start on a Sunday mornming when the occupying army was relaxing in Arnhem. Similarly Dunkirk has been spun as a historic victory out of the jaws of defeat, when there are factors which suggested that Hitler did not want to totally defeat the British as he anticipated a successsful invasion or peace ( vide Hess visit in 1941) and ALLOWED the British to evacuate. Evidence was that the tanks were ordered to stop before Dunkirk but history says they ran out of petrol
these are not criticisms but observations to make you aware
So in the Battle of Britain we are told that the Brits are fighting fortress Europe all on its own for Democracy O K but the same spin is put on when we hear the Democracy must be introduced into the Middle east and this is one of the reasons of the war on terror. Once again I have no quarrel with the strategy but please show respect to the viewer. We all know that democracy is anathema to a religious sectarian society as the muslims (Shia v Sunni) and Ireland Protestant v Roman Catholic) so we are told that at the head of Britain is that DEMOCRATICALLY !!!!! elected Prime MinIister Churchill. He was never never elected.the establishment saw him as a failure e g Gallipoli
The fact is he was appointed by default of Chamberlains resignation and after Lord Halifax the preferred appointee declined as he could not fullfil the responsibilities from the House of Lords. It was a lucky break in WW2 although in the very early stages he
did allow the peace party to carry on. Hitler was surprised to find he had a war on 2 fronts in the west and the East (Barbarossa )which was not in the plan when Churchill sank the French Navy in Toulon , That was the Britiish act of war Originally the conquest of the west was a quick campaign with Franco, Petain , and Moseley being considered as quisling presidents
So over 60 years late the same propaganda is meted out in the invasion of Iraq.
This could not have been an innocent mistake as evidenced by the upgrading of the pigeons of Trafalgar Square to DOVES !!!!!!!!!!!!!
The conclusion of the film is that unless Britain can win the USA will be invaded by Nazi hordes. Nothing wrong with that conclusion as we now know that the V3 was planned to be an intercontinental missile aimed at the USA. So the surprise was instead of applauding the British the message was next stop USA Pure Propaganda
This brings into question whether all the motives of USA conversion from isolationism to joining the allies has been fully revealed especially if you believe that having broken the Jap codes the U S administration knew of the impending strike at Pearl Harbour. a warning was given by western Union Telegram which was delived on the Monday morning after the attack. Was it a coincidence that all the aircraft carriers the ultimate victors against the Japanese navy was on manouevres . Worrying thoughts of revisionist history but that is what must be done by the viewer . Dont be manipulated but think and understand for yourself as I have done
PS 5 stars if you lived during ww2
3 stars because of dating of the production
