Morgan Freeman
Born 1 June 1937, in Memphis Tennessee, Morgan Freeman is possessed of perhaps the finest voice in cinema today: rich, warm, Presidential.. godly, even. And perfectly bearing the necessary gravitas for penguin-related narration.
An early, six year stint on kids TV show The Electric Company almost killed off Freeman’s dreams of becoming a movie actor, and playing Malcolm X in Death Of A Prophet and being picked by Paul Newman for Harry & Son were two rare highlights in a depressing 80s period. And then Driving Miss Daisy came along, which the man himself rates – alongside Glory, Shawshank and Unforgiven – as his best work. Since then, he’s always been great, even on the occasions when the film isn’t.
Rachel Weisz says he’s the sexiest man she’s ever met, he’s Nelson Mandela’s own choice to portray the former SA President’s life story, and despite winning a long-overdue Oscar for Million Dollar Baby, he remains humble, often describing himself as lucky. A keen yachtsman, he’s got a boat moored in the Caribbean, which – we suggested – was a much nicer place to sail than the English Channel: “Bloody well is, too”, he replied, with feeling born of bitter, salt-stung experience. And for all such reasons, we like the cut of his jib.
