Brief synopsis of This Is England - BLU-RAY Version

Set during the summer of 1983, THIS IS ENGLAND is the poignant story of Shaun (Thomas Turgoos) an unpopular kid who discovers a sense of belonging among a group of peaceful skinheads. Having lost his father during the Falklands Conflict, Shaun sees something of a father figure in Woody (Joseph Gilgun), the gang's leader. However, the warmth and affection is short-lived, as Combo (Stephen Graham) – a former member of the group, and radical right-wing racist is released from prison and divides the friends with his deeply disturbed outlook. Whereas Woody had strived to bring everyone together through their love of music, Combo seeks to mobilise a force, with his sights set on spreading chaos and hatred. At only 12 years of age, and of volatile frame of mind, Shaun is susceptible to Combo's charismatic, yet gravely dangerous philosophising. As adulthood beckons and with Combo's rage manifesting into stark violence, Shaun will have to decide which side of the line he's going to stand. The sixth feature from writer/Director Shane Meadows (A ROOM FOR ROMEO BRASS, DEAD MAN’S SHOES), THIS IS ENGLAND is a bitter-sweet rites of passage tale that is destined to be remembered for years to come.

I don't know if it was just me but i wasnt expecting this film to go where it does. With all the hype about it i rented it thinking it was going to be about skinheads from back in the day beating up a few people like we are used to. Maybe this is why i was so dissapointed with the film. For me it doesnt seem to go anywhere, nothing really happens throughout the film that gives me something to write about. Right at the end just when things start to get a bit heated and i'm thinking 'oh, right now we are getting in to it', the film finished.

I really dont know why this film got so much interest and why so many people love it.

Very engaging film. Set in the eighties the film is about growing up in a broken family unit. The main characters who turn to violence use the skin head movement as an excuse to take out their frustrations on those minorities that are vulnerable.

The acting and music is fantastic.

It was so good and engrossing and I didn't even notice the migraine i was having while watching. This film is not some controversial blood and guts romper stomper fare that some reviewers may have been expecting (see above), but has some of the canniest, most memorable characters I have seen in a film in a long time, partly due to it's autobiographical nature. It's a film that's from the heart and head and not just an empty reaction to todays climate of repression and fear from a director who is trying to make a name for himself, but it is from one of our most treasured directors who gives us the hot, the cold and the REALITY of life which is so often mislaid in current films, an excellent piece of work.
