Brief synopsis of Cambridge Spies

Based on a true story, CAMBRIDGE SPIES is a BBC drama detailing the biggest spy scandal in British history. In 1934, four outstanding students at Cambridge University--Guy Burgess, Anthony Blunt, Kim Philby, Donald Maclean--who shared a passion for communism, were recruited to spy for the Soviet Union. Over the next 20 years the men assumed prominent positions in their chosen fields whilst passing on vital information to the Russians. Amidst a world of espionage, lies, bluffs, homosexuality and alcoholism, the four share a bond in the form of their common betrayal.

...says one Communist agent to another in this TV dramatisation. Pity the same tact was not employed when considering the desirability of assailing the viewer with multiple scenes of revolting pornography. As for the politics, although the four protagonists are labelled 'traitors' in the opening titles, the facts on display seem firmly edited in their favour. Thus, for example, while the viewer is presented with the German bombing of Guernica, no mention is made of other atrocities such as those committed at the Stalinist Santa Ursula (illegal) prison, known as the Dachau of Republican Spain. The Fab Four are presented as having but two moral choices in this world: Communism or Fascism. No room for the 'Countenance Divine' of the hymn with which this mini-series opens and closes.

Rated - 5 starsEnthralling!

This is enthralling, five-star entertainment. The script fantastic and the acting superb. This series manages to convey the atmosphere of the 1930s, and why four young men from privileged backgrounds not only become communists, but spied for Soviet Intelligence. They had to denounce all they believed in - in order to live double-lives. As one said,'The middle ground has gone - you are either a communist or a fascist.' This captivating series is one of those rare treats - it keeps you gripped - even though you know the ending!!!

Rated - 4 starsAnother wonderful BBC drama

The BBC doing what it does best. Wonderfully acted, amazing sets and locations and very educational while being entertaining. I'd love to know how historically accurate it is though - they come across as 4 misguided souls who admirably wanted to save the world from fascism. And just why doesn't Tom Hollander get the recognition he deserves ? a fantastic actor!
