Brief synopsis of Miss Sadie Thompson

Life is dull for a squad of Marines stationed on a sleepy South Pacific island, but their routine is turned upside-down with the arrival of Sadie Thompson (Rita Hayworth), a fun-loving gal who is stuck in Hawaii for a week as she waits for the ship that will take her to her new job as a nightclub singer. The rowdy fun she provokes quickly draws the attention of Alfred Davidson (Jose Ferrer), a pious missionary who suspects that Sadie has had a shady past. Davidson uses his influence to expel Sadie from the island, just as she and a friendly sergeant (Aldo Ray) have begun to fall in love. This act leads to a fiery emotional climax.
The fourth adaptation of a short story by Somerset Maugham, Hayworth's Sadie is certainly the brassiest and most sensual depiction the character has received. For this reason, the film was banned in certain areas of the United States at the time of its original release. MISS SADIE THOMPSON was originally filmed in 3-D, and features lush scenery and several jazzy songs, including The Heat is On and Blue Pacific Blues. Moreover, the film marks one of Hayworth's best all-time performances.

Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

It's Somerset Maugham's Rain again, this time with sexy Rita Hayworth in the title role as the hooker who floors a religious fanatic, filmed in glorious Technicolor with some terrific songs added to boot. Originally this movie was made in 3-D and composed for widescreen, so on TV you see too many floors and ceilings and a lot of “air” above the actors' heads in close-up. Try to ignore all that, and enjoy instead a ripe, over-the-top performance from the smitten José Ferrer and watch out, too, for a young Charles Bronson in support. If this is what Columbia dished out in the days of the Hays Code and heavy censorship, imagine what you could do with this story now — if you could ever find a more provocative Sadie than Hayworth, that is.

Vigorous semi-musical remake of Rain (qv); a good star vehicle, but not otherwise notable.

MISS SADIE THOMPSON was filmed in 3d ,but only a very few cinemas showed it in 3d. The location settings are spectacular, and if you have Tridef or colorcode 3d installed on your pc,the added depth together with the original technicolor print make it superb.
