Ford, who can be unnervingly emotionless on screen, was simply the wrong choice for the role, and director Mike Nichols invests the action with so much gloss and polish you feel as if your brain is swimming in an oil slick. Annette Bening looks lovely and gives one of the film's better performances, but from the start it's hard to sympathise with the family and their plight.
