Brief synopsis of Neil Young - Greendale

"Greendale" is one of Neil Young's most bold and ambitious statements to date. A concept album based around the fictional town of Greendale, Young draws on the experiences of a range of inhabitants, and forms songs around their daily lives. Still pushing himself after decades at the top, Young proves with "Greendale" why his music is so highly regarded by critics, musical peers, and fans alike. This DVD-Audio version of the album has been digitally remastered to provide a stunning new listening experience.

This is not the movie of the CD directed by Jim Jarmusch as i was expecting, but basically just the cd on dvd, with very little additional footage. Although the music is excellent you may as well just listen to the CD

This is actually the DVD Audio version of Greendale, and not one of the 3 different DVD video releases associated with this project. It's good sonically as a DVD-A, but don't get it confused with the 'film' version.

This DVD is the Neil Young (alias Bernard Shakey) film 'Greendale'. It exactly follows the album, but with images to accompany the music. The cast, who mime to Neil Young's lyrics, comprise friends, family, and various employees (tour manager, ranch hand etc!). Everyone does a very commendable job, especially Sarah White who plays the young and vivacious eco-activist Sun Green.

I did not expect too much from the film, because I did not rate the CD very highly on its release; while Young's previous film projects have not met with critical success. However, this film was a pleasant surprise. It makes clear the story behind the songs and greatly increased my appreciation of the music. Greendale has now risen up my list of favourite Neil Young albums.

The film looks homemade, in line with the stripped-down music, and is filmed with (shakey) hand-held cameras. Greendale is probably best regarded as a highly original music video, rather than a stand-alone movie. It has many striking and memorable images, and a sharp political edge.

Do not miss the option marked 'extra' on the menus. This is concert footage that takes over from where the credits finish, with Neil Young and Crazy Horse joining the film's cast on stage to perform an exhilarating encore of 'be the rain'.

This DVD contains 6 (six) minutes of lousy video, a couple of stills and music from CD. Total waste of 9 Gb worth of storage medium. If you want music get yourself a CD. If you want a video get something else, there is nothing for you here.

This is not a comment on the quality of music nor artist.
