Brief synopsis of Bruce Almighty

Jim Carrey returns to his zany, manic roots in this Capraesque comedy from director Tom Shadyac (ACE VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE and LIAR LIAR). Carrey stars as Bruce Nolan, a television reporter in Buffalo, New York who lives a normal life with his sweet girlfriend Grace (Jennifer Aniston). But Bruce isn't satisfied, and after a particularly bad day where everything goes wrong, he blames God. After spewing a tirade of curses God's way, God (Morgan Freeman in a gentlemanly white suit) responds and challenges Bruce to take over and see if he can run things better. Of course, there are some conditions; Bruce can only have the "almighty" powers for 24 hours and only in the Buffalo area. This doesn't stop Bruce, and he responds to his newfound powers with selfish, childlike zeal. Like a kid in a sweet shop, Bruce sets off making one hysterical, yet disastrous, decision after another. He pulls the moon closer to the earth so he can have a more romantic evening with Grace, unaware that his actions cause a tidal wave in Japan and responds to the prayers of the world with a mass-email "yes" that creates millions of lottery winners, riots, and mayhem. Ultimately, Bruce proves he is only human, and cannot possibly fill God's shoes, although he has a great time trying.

Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

In director Tom Shadyac's comedy fantasy, Jim Carrey plays professionally wacky TV news reporter Bruce Nolan, who is passed over for promotion, vents his anger live on air, is sacked and curses God for doing a lousy job. Rising to the bait, the Almighty — a coolly majestic Morgan Freeman — gives the sceptical Bruce the chance to see if he can do any better. Bruce is none too bothered with world peace or any of that stuff; he does what you might expect a Carrey character to do when given divine powers — enlarge girlfriend Jennifer Aniston's boobs, perform a Red Sea-style parting of his tomato soup and pull the Moon out of its usual orbit to create a romantic moment. This wastes no time on deep theological questions; it's a return to Carrey the clown after public indifference to Carrey the actor. It has a neat premise and plenty of laughs, but it's not a film to stay long in the memory.

New York Times

"...The notion of omnipotence prompts Mr. Carrey to go to new adrenaline-crazed comic extremes....[He] sustains a maniacal energy that explodes off the screen in blinding electrical zaps..."

Chicago Sun

"...A charmer....[Aniston] can play comedy, which is not easy, and she can keep up with Carrey while not simply mirroring his zaniness..."

My wife was bought this the christmas it came out. All the family were round and we stuck it on after Christmas dinner. After too much food and alcohol, the last thing we needed to do was put a crap film on. Everyone was asleep within twenty minutes. Boring in the extreme. Jim Carrey is just not funny!!!

This latest Carey film was excellet. I am now bored with his silly face twisting antics but that aside there is plenty more classic humour in this film to make you laugh out loud. The fun any person can have with the powers of god..! Brilliantly done..!

Rated - 5 starsBRILLIANTLY FUNNY

Jim Carrey is God - Need I say more? He's brilliantly funny as usual. So what if Jim pulls some more faces and does more strange voices- they're hysterical! (Look out for a spookily spot on impersonation of Clint Eastwood) Jim Carrey is under rated as an actor and this movie shows off only some of his talents. There were times this movie had me crying with laughter.

Rated - 1 starsOh my bruce....

Jim Carrey is usually unforgivingly irritating ('The Truman Show' excepted), but in this mess his mugging is the only thing that makes it vaguely entertaining! (Oh, apart from Jennifer Anniston who is her usual sweet self)

An appallingly lazy, aimless script (shot on an even lazier set, anyone else recognise Hill Valley from Back to the Future???) with the kind of childish premise an unimaginative 10-year-old might base an English assignment on. No real characterisation or constructive character development. And who in 2003 has a pager???!!!!

And Tom Shadyac has the nerve to call this sub-standard Hollywood b*ll*cks 'A Film By....'!! He shouldn't be directing films, hell, he couldn't even direct his p*ss into the toilet in the morning!

Not bad but not good either if you know what i mean. Jennifer Anniston should not have bothered as it does nothing for her career and she only has a bit part anyway. This film is funny at times but not nearly enough.

As ever, Jim is hilarious, but this film has a clever moral - DONT COMPLAIN ABOUT THE WAY GOD RUNS THE WORLD.
