Brief synopsis of Casper

Casper the ghost was created in 1940 by Joe Orolio. This is the live-action/animated family feature film starring the friendly young spook. In it, greedy heiress Carrigan Crittenden (Cathy Moriarty) inherits the haunted Whipstaff Manor and discovers that the house contains a treasure, which is closely guarded by three nasty ghosts. She invites ghost therapist Dr. James Harvey, and his daughter Kat, (Bill Pullman and Christina Ricci) to move into the eerie mansion and get rid of the supernatural creatures.
The nephew of the three spirits is Casper, a friendly but lonely ghost who becomes Kat's pal. Casper takes Kat to his father's secret lab where he once attempted to bring Casper back to life with a special machine. Carrigan eavesdrops on their conversation and decides to become a ghost herself, in the hope that she will get the booty more easily. Then she can use the machine to change back to a human. However, Carrigan doesn't realise that you can't flirt with the afterlife.

Rating of 4 stars out of 5 Radio Times

With comic books and cartoon series full of muscle-bound superheroes vying for big-screen superstardom, it's nice to see a gentler character making such an impact in his first film outing. Here, Casper the Friendly Ghost is doing his bit to make Whipstaff Manor a homelier place for lonely Christina Ricci to live, but it's his ghoulish uncles Stretch, Stinkie and Fatso who scare up all the fun in this enchanting family comedy. Although the movie is dominated by special effects, Cathy Moriarty's hissable villainy nearly steals the show. Once just won't be enough for most youngsters.

Halliwell's Film Guide

An unpleasant attempt to revive a comic-book character, both sickly with sentiment and tasteless in its attitudes to life and death; the special effects are spectacular, though.

Lonely guy he may be, but the incorporeal, 'living-impaired' kid of the title occupies a haunted manor like Xanadu,... Read more on www.timeout.com
