Brief synopsis of Around The World In Eighty Days

Jules Verne's classic adventure, this time recorded for television, stars Pierce Brosnan as Phileas Fogg who places a bet that he can circumnavigate the globe within 80 days. His sidekick Passepartout is played by Eric Idle, and they are pursued by a detective (Peter Ustinov) to check they are abiding by the rules. Epic adventures on land, sea and air.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Awfully padded travelogue which seems to have been a bore even at the time, despite a few magic-carpet tricks.

Rated - 4 starsGreat Mini Series

This is a great little mini series chronicaling the adventures of Phileas Fogg as he travels around the world. At first Brosnan seems miscast in the role of Fogg, but he grows into the role well. The story really benefits from great characterisation and a good script. This story does not have a big screen feel about it, but that has to be expected as it was made for the little screen. The series is in three sections; so you can watch it in three small doses, or do what I did and watch all 4 and a bit hours in one giant sitting. Happy Viewing!

Rated - 1 starsEarly Brosnan for fans only!

SolarvanMan from Thirsk , 07/03/2005

I was expecting great things from this film, but Pierce Brosnan just could not compare to the Great David Niven in the earlier 1950's version. A great James Bond he has been, but the Victorian gentleman explorer he is not.

There was good smattering of stars throughout the film, and some of the locations were quite good. But somehow it all just lacked style and credibility. I found it dragged a fair bit later on as well, and is pretty long overall. Not recommended except for diehard Brosnan fans.

A good adventure story on 2 dvds. It was too long to watch in one sitting
