Brief synopsis of Faster Pussycat Kill...Kill!

Russ Meyer's ode to the violence in women...

Welcome to the world of female violence. Meet the sumptuously sexy Varla, played at full throttle and with well-upholstered relish by the half-Japanese, half-Cherokee Tura Satana. She's having a lovely time with her two go-going pals, dancing the Watusi in a sleazy bar packed with leering, jeering macho-men.

And after a hard day's grooving, what better than a drag race in the desert? So it's off we go, hurtling across the California sands as we follow the trio of homicidal go-go gals, hell bent on wreaking revenge on all things male, as they embark on a desperate desert drive-thru, taking a bikini-clad wimp hostage and leaving a trail of human wreckage in their wake.

Filmed in glorious black and blue, Faster Pussycat has been hailed as "the best movie ever made" and a "definite Desert Island Movie". Celluloid proof that Russ Meyer is a complete and utter cult.

Russ meyer is often seen as a dirty old men with a love of buxom women. Which is no bad thing.

In any case, this film proves his enduring appeal as a writer/director of witty, dark and way ahead of their time movies about the underbelly of america, as seen from the fringes. Simple but excellent combining equal measures titillation and genuine thrills. Made with a crew of 5 apparently for next to nothing. Just shows what can be done with great talents.

Rated - 2 starsDoesn't really live up to the hype

This is a quirky film (name a Russ Meyer film that isn't!) Tura Satana plays Varla in probably her most famous r?le to date. Haji plays Rosie, Billie is played by Lori Williams (with Sue Bernard playing the hapless Linda). I urge you to check out the DVD extras to see what they look like now (to be honest, Tura still looks gorgeous, but poor Haji is almost unrecogniseable!). This is a stylish film with trailer-park chic and a heck of a lot of attitude. Are these women feminist r?le-models or the complete opposite? Who knows. It's good for a laugh. But don't have your hopes up too much. And quite why it still gets given an 18 certificate (times have moved one after all) defies logic. Don't watch it if you want to be turned on in any way. But for kitch trash value, it's worth it!

Rated - 5 starsUnder-appeciated comic-book aesthetics from a true auteur

A customer from Bristol , 09/07/2008

This film features my all-time favourite opening sequence, it's just so cool. From then follows what can only be described as comic book-esque pulp cinema; outrageously abundant, sexually-dominant women, feeble emasculated men, fast cars, killings and a hidden loot. Meyer's cinema is the flip-side to the swinging sixties.

I'm not quite sure what those who claim they were disappointed by this film were expecting, The Apu Trilogy perhaps? Ugetsu Monogatari? Fanny and Alexander? Who knows. For me, Russ Meyer is a true auteur. You can tell within seconds of watching any of his films that you are watching a Russ Meyer flick.
