Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Spawning more than 100 episodes, the Rockford Files series was devised by producer Roy Huggins and writer Stephen J Cannell for Huggins's Maverick star, James Garner. Garner later won an Emmy for his portrayal of the private investigator whose wrongful detention in San Quentin prompted him to plump for cases the police had abandoned. In this pilot for the first series, Lindsay Wagner stumps up the $200 a day (“plus expenses”) to trace the killer of her hobo father. As with many pilots, there's a certain amount of scene-setting involved, but Garner's self-deprecating style is fully formed. Both ex-cellmate Stuart Margolin and Joe Santos returned for the series proper, though Noah Beery would replace Robert Donley as Garner's opinionated father.

Rated - 5 starsAn American 70s Classic

Andrew Thomas from Marple , 01/02/2006

I know it's cheesy, predictable and formulaic - but there was just something great about this series. Maybe it was the music, possibly the ringing telephone and different voice message at the start of each programme, the outrageous 70s American cars, the clothes, the trailer at the beach or even the different bad guys every week. But best of all - James Garner is just brilliant. Great acting, tough, caring, funny and at $200 a day plus expenses, a bargain.

This series, now 30 years old, stands the test of time. Suberb storylines and consistently outstanding acting. James Garner is marvelous as the private detective Jim Rockford living out of a dilapidated trailer near the beach.Garner plays Rockford as tough, caring and humourous. He is brilliantly supported by a regular bunch of characters who add to the fun.A delightful series.

The stories have a similar ring & the clothes are strictly Seventies, however, the memories are priceless.

You could release this today as a brand new series and it will be a great hit. It is a classic show but does not appear dated. James Garner is a likeable hero and without trying to be mysterious or heroic does a great job. You will also find some of the best car chases around in this series.

Put this in your list and you will enjoy it.
