Brief synopsis of The Closer You Get

A group of ordinary Irish fellows are bored and dissatisfied with the local women in their small town. Led by fashion-conscious butcher Ian, they decide to pool their resources and put an ad in an American newspaper inviting American women to their town dance in the hope of attracting some exciting potential mates. The local women, including Ian's smitten assistant Siobhan, decide to retaliate in their own way. A sweet and charming romantic comedy from the producer of THE FULL MONTY.

Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Uberto Pasolini, producer of The Full Monty, strays into Waking Ned territory with this ribald piece of Oirish whimsy. Screenwriter William Ivory might have given the Blarney Stone an extra touch, but he's nevertheless concocted an amiable fable about the sexual frustrations of a small Donegal community, which would rather resort to Florida beach babes and Spanish trawlermen than see beneath the workaday façade of its neighbours. Ian Hart excels as the crotch-obsessed butcher, while Ewan Stewart impresses as a virginal mammy's boy. True romantics, however, will warm to the slow-burning relationship between timid shepherd Sean McGinley and neglected publican Niamh Cusack.

Los Angeles Times

"THE CLOSER YOU GET is a droll, hearty Irish comedy with a serious undertow all the more effective for its unexpected candor and depth..."

A slow one but happening, curiosity exists till the end. Really funny and has a few messages.

Ignore the offensive cover, this is a gem of a film. Lovely character-led movie set in Ireland about people not looking at what they really have. A group of men write an ad to find their perfect woman ('fit and sporty, aged 20-21' and living in Miami) before thinking of looking at the women in their village. Beautiful scenery and a feel-good film. I loved it.

This was a nice gentle comedy, good to watch when you are a bit tired and can't handle anything too fast paced but want to go to bed with that warm feelgood factor.

We both enjoyed this film - easygoing and not much thought required. Very hard to understand the Irish accents yet it was the dialogue that made the film so good! Heart-warming & humorous exploration of what we are searching for and what we find.
