Brief synopsis of Lara Croft - Tomb Raider

LARA CROFT - TOMB RAIDER stars Angelina Jolie as Croft, a tough, sexy, heavily armed adventurer. Fans of the cult video game on which the film is based will undoubtedly already be familiar with the plot, which sees Croft blasting her way past various monsters, villains, and pitfalls as she traverses the globe in search of a mysterious ancient artefact that holds the key to her dead father's involvement with a secretive group known as the Illuminati. Jolie is perfectly cast as the voluptuous, trigger-happy heroine, and sports a fine British accent.

The transfer of successful video games to the big screen has a less than glorious track record, from Super Mario Bros to Street Fighter. Hopes were high for this Tomb Raider adaptation, however, partly because Lara Croft was a natural action-movie icon and partly because the game was known for decent narrative. What a shame then that it's such a huge dud. Angelina Jolie makes a credible enough Lara — athletic, somewhat top-heavy, and with an English accent borrowed from Liz Hurley (rumoured to be an early contender for the role). But not only is the story unsatisfying — a two-act yarn about finding two halves of an artefact in Cambodia and Siberia — the direction from Simon West (so good at the helm of Con Air) does nothing to whip up any momentum as Lara joins forces with the apparent villains (led by Iain Glen) and jumps about a bit, mostly in the dark. The Indiana Jones series did this tomb-raiding schtick so much better; and a few monkey statues coming to life are short change after the recent full-on Mummy films. In short, it's boring. A half-baked subplot involving Lara's dead father (played by Jolie's dad Jon Voight) does little to involve the viewer and fans of the game will be itching to get back to their consoles.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Trivial nonsense, a worthless farrago of stupefying boredom, based on best-selling videogames; Jolie, though, does seem like the creation of a masculine cyber-fantasy.

Rolling Stone

"....As adventuress Lara Croft, Angelina Jolie looks good enough kicking ass to make you wish the movie was interactive and not just the video game..."

This was a fantastic piece of escapism with a good solid story and a super ending! What really made the movie however was the sultry Angelina Jolie.

The girl just exudes pure sex appeal that is topped of with a well-to-do and horny English accent. The shower scene blew my mind.

I digress – rent it! It could only be bettered if Angelina starts wearing even less (we can only hope guys)! A really cool film.

I thought I'd give this film a chance despite some bad reviews mainly because I truly fancy Angelina Jolie and came away pleasantly suprised. This is a not a bad film at all with some good action and nice effects plus Miss Jolie with a posh English accent is simply scrumptious. Not the best I've seen but a lot better than many, and definately worth a watch if you like this type of movie.

Rated - 2 starsLooking for Horn

rikamaru from a little bit of ashby de-la zouch in watford , 19/10/2005

Angelina Jolie gives me the horn. Lara Croft gives me the horn. Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft gives me the Mega-Horn. When I first heard about this film I thought I was going to Horn Heaven. I was wrong. This film didn't give me the horn. While there were moments of horn possibility - Jolie as Lara in skimpy, tight lycra clothes - overall the film was horn-less. I found myself bored, I can't remember the story and after ninety minutes it left me limp.

If you want triple A (Action Adventure Archeology) then Indiana Jones, The Mummy, The Goonies (Baby Ruth! Baby Ruth!) or even National Treasure will do the trick. If, like me, you want the Horn then we continue down that lonely road looking for a film which will bring forth the horn.

P.S. I wonder if Tomb Raider 2 is worth a try.

Rated - 3 starsNot actually that bad

wolfenchild from Croydon, England , 14/02/2004

I've heard pretty much only bad things about this outing of Lara Croft. So I rented it expecting to be thoroughly underwhelmed, and... it wasn't actually that bad. Whether it was the low expectations or something else, but I didn't find myself completely bored out of my skull or thinking 'this sucks' like I thought I might.

Action-game herione Lara Croft, millionaire heiress and Tomb-Raiding, all-action archaeologist, is brough to life in this action flick, played by Angelina Jolie, who actually pulls off a decent British accent, unlike most American actors. As a briton myself, I can consider myself an expert on the subject. The plot isn't exactly gripping, but since the focus of the film is the action rather than oscar-winning material, this isn't surprising. The planets of the solar system are going into planetary alignment which only occurs every 5,000 years, and a secret society known only as the Illuminati is seeking an ancient talisman that gives its possessor the ability to control time. To obtain these pieces an ancient clock must be used, which belongs to Miss Croft, hidden and handed down to her by her deceased father, Richard Croft (played by Jolie's real-life estranged father, Jon Voight). Lara must obtain the talisman and destroy it in order to stop it falling into the wrong-doing hands of the illuminati.

Let it be said, the plot isn't great, and if you're expecting an in-depth, thinking-man's film, then go elsewhere. This film is about guns, vehicles, action and Angelina Jolie jumping around in tight clothing. And as an action movie it succeds in entertaining. It has some very cool moments, and if you're looking to fill an bored 90 minutes of your life, I think you could do a lot worse than this.

as i play those games it was nice to see the film makers keeping to that story and look to the film/games

angelina jolie is brilliant as lara croft

the accent is good too

not a great film though as i hoped it would be better

i know my friend in the states said that certain fight scenes at the end had been cut out due to bbfc head butting as in the matrix as they dont like them in films for some reason

apart from that a good film
