Bobby Darin Entertains doesn't have the best sound quality and the black-and-white images reflect their age, but this is a cracking showcase for the immortal talents of the 20-something Bobby Darin, with rare clips from his assured guest appearances with huge stars like Bob Hope, Jack Benny and Jimmy Durante in which he more than held his own. Darin deserves to be ranked alongside Sinatra as a singer and performer and possessed talents Sinatra never had - songwriting, natural comedic gifts, inspired mimicry and the ability to play half-a-dozen instruments well. (And no, he didn't win Best Supporting Actor Oscar, but he was nominated for Captain Newman MD).His intelligent reading of lyrics, whether swinging Some of These Days or wistful on I Have Dreamed, are well in evidence here and his take on One For My Baby is as entertaining as it gets. The newsreel clips are an excellent bonus. A welcome reprise from a superior artiste.

Watch Beyond The Sea instead.I'm a great Bobby Darin fan, but this DVD doesn't do him justice. The camera work is amateur, but the real killer is the soundtrack. It is very poor. The DVD does show how talented he was, but someone who wasn't already a fan would doubt that. I know it was Kevin Spacey playing him and singing in beyond the sea, but it would definately win Bobby a lot more fans who would then listen to his CDs.
