Brief synopsis of Swindled

Ernesto (Ernesto Alterio) is apprenticed to well-seasoned con artists Manco (Manuel Alexandre) and Federico (Federico Luppi), when the trio decide to execute their coup de grace in this plot-twisted thriller. In order to pull off this large job, they enlist the help of Pilar (Victoria Abril), a classic femme fatale with whom Federico shares a past--and who is his only weakness.

Rated - 4 starsSlick, swishy swindlers thriller

If you liked 9 Queens or Bound you'll probably respond to this. A twisty, sarky, animated yarn of con tricksters and double-crosses, it's got great camerawork and stunning performances (Federico Luppi in particular is fantastic). The first hour sweeps along at a terrific clip, but the final denouement becomes implausible.

Still, it's a stylish and funny film with plenty to keep you entertained. Not a masterpiece, but a smart and snappy bit of entertainment. I enjoyed it, and for those men (there are plenty) who can't get enough of Ms Abril it will be a must. Wonder why it never got much attention in the UK?

Was expecting a film like The Sting or Oceans 11; charasmatic clever conmen get the better of nasty villians through clever scams. Which is exactly what I got. Except: the level of violence gradually increases during the film. OK, violence is part of modern films and I'm sure conmen get violent, but it makes it more difficult to side with the crook. Also, without giving too much away, the film gets to a point, and after that all the tricks boil down to the same thing-and it's not big and it's not clever. Overall, a good film, and you shouldn't let the subtitles put you off. But there are much better examples of the genre, and some of them are Hollywood-which isn't something you often say.

Rated - 2 starsnot as good as it thinks it is

I was disappointed in this film. From the very first scene it was lazily implausible. It was very much trying to emulate bigger brasher Hollwood film like oceans 11 or even the superior Confidence but to my mind it was not good enough either in its scripting or its direction.

Rated - 4 starsDon't be put off by subtitles

I don't understand the low rating for this film - I guess it's down to subtitles.

Good story, well acted. A lot of twists in the tale, but so many that it feels contrived.

Just don't watch when tired - the subtitle are very quick

Rated - 3 starsThey push it about twice too far

Martin Cross from Glasgow [Highly rated reviewer] , 16/07/2008

The swindler swindled is always a good story in my book, especially if it's done stylishly as here. But then they do it again and again and it just becomes daft; from half way through it's a game of guess where the real ending is. Looks lovely, but go for Nine Queens instead to see how it should be done.
