RelatedCritics ReviewsThis rags-to-riches vehicle for superstar diva Mariah Carey invites ridicule on almost every level. In her starring debut as a struggling backing singer hoisted into the big time, Carey possesses all the star quality of a pub karaoke singer but none of the memorable tunes. The gaudy early eighties setting provides a certain nostalgic amusement, though the rest of the limited entertainment on show is of the unplanned variety. Whether the lowest ebb is Carey and manager/boyfriend Max Beesley's telepathic compositional skills, the shock reappearance of the singer's beloved childhood cat or the reunion with her mother that — literally — comes out of nowhere, this is a staggeringly silly movie.
