Brief synopsis of Deer Hunter, The - HD DVD Version

This epic look at the Vietnam War and its effects told through the lives of a tight knit group of friends from a Pennsylvania town was Michael Cimino's second film and established him in the pantheon of American directors. Complex and emotionally raw performances from Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep earned each an Academy Award nomination, and Christopher Walken's portrayal of Nick, who survives capture but is unable to escape its trauma, is a tour de force that earned him the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. With a keen eye for nuance and a carefully structured script, Cimino interweaves the rituals great and small that make up the lives of his characters, creating a poignant sense of what remained constant and what was forever changed by their experience of the war.

Rated - 5 starsan excellent film

I hadn't seen this film before, one of those you miss and can't remember why? Not sure I would go out and buy this for the picture quality, there are some good landscape shots that look impresssive but overall I think a good upscale of the dvd would be a better value than the HD version.

Which ever you prefer, well worth watching.

Rated - 3 starsBut I like orange!

Although the message of how war corrupts and affects people more than they can ever realise is particularlly poignant and hits you with a sledgehammer. I would never put down the significance of this, but my did they drag it out! Not much happens within the first 45 mins and I had to watch this film in more than one sitting as I didn't have 3 hours to spare. It was one of those films that made you think about it after but should have been edited down some.
