Brief synopsis of Teaching Mrs Tingle

From the king of teen angst and horror Williamson comes this story of straight-A student Leigh Ann (Holmes) whose hopes for a scholarship are in jeopardy thanks to the tyrannical Mrs. Tingle (Mirren). When Leigh Ann and her friends confront Mrs. Tingle about their grades, a series of mishaps lead to a wicked game of cat and mouse. Part black comedy, part teen melodrama, part revenge on Williamson's own Mrs. Tingle. Original title KILLING MRS. TINGLE.

Rating of 2 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Despite the pantomime efforts of Helen Mirren and a script packed with bitchy one-liners from debut director Kevin Williamson (the witty, post-modern genius behind the Scream trilogy and TV's Dawson's Creek), this black comedy falls uncomfortably between black and comedic. Mirren plays the eponymous, mean-spirited history teacher who stands in the way of student Katie Holmes and her Harvard scholarship. After an incident with an exam paper, Holmes and two friends end up tying their nemesis to a bed and have 48 hours to turn the situation around. Originally called Killing Mrs Tingle and amended after the Columbine High School shootings, this is only really worth watching for Mirren.

Is Teaching mrs Tingle just a film or is it one big emotion. It could of just been a teen movie that wouldnt of appealed to anybody else, but instead the makers opted to do something much more than that they desided to make a film about the presures of living in a small town, the envy that old teachers have for their young students and waht lenghs people go to to achieve their dreams. Katie Holmes is the perfect student, the perfect girl and has the perfect life. Well thats what she tells everybody, her one ambition in life is to become a writer, and the only thing coming between her and that dream is Mrs Tingle her history teacher, after spending 6 months working at her history project mrs tingle acuses her of cheating. This could come between Katie and her dream. One mad night Katie and her friends, one of which has her heart set on being a famous actress and the other not caring what happens in his life, go over to Mrs Tingles house and knock her out, in a moment of madness they deside to tie her to the bed. from then it becomes a battle of wits, Mrs Tingle observes everything thats happening with the teenage group and uses it all to her own advantage, and she gets to work pitting each of them against each other. Along the course of the movie you realise just why mrs tingle is so horrible and why she hates herself and everyone around her. And we also get to see just why Katie has such a undieing passion to become a writer. This film was wrote and directed by Kevin Williamson of I know what you did last summer and the scream fame. The acting in this film is really brilliant and speacile credit should go to Helen Mirren as Mrs Tingle and also Katies best friend. Watch this film it is not just a teenage flick it is something much more important that that it truly is a heart felt film.

Considering that the budget for this must have been lousy they've come up with a really good movie. Helen Mirren is excellant as the teacher from hell ( we've all had one!! ) and the young cast hold their own. Katie Holmes character is a little too close to Joey Potter sometimes but is still fun to watch. High school fun with a twist, definately worth a watch.
