Brief synopsis of La Haine - HD DVD Version

Shot in black and white cinema verite style, this film follows a day in the life of three aimless, violence-prone, ethnically-diverse young men who hail from the same decaying housing project in Paris. Vinz, who is Jewish, is the angriest and the least intelligent of the three. North African Said is calmer, but is the most despairing about his future. Hubert is Black, and the most mature, channeling his rage through boxing. Although the trio seethes with fury over the arrest and senseless beating of an Arab friend, each manages to keep the other in check. But that changes after Vinz finds a loaded gun--and the trio becomes entangled with the police, and later a group of skinheads. Mathieu Kassovitz won the Best Director prize for LA HAINE at the Cannes Film Festival.

Rated - 4 starsBRUTAL REALISM OF FRENCH RIOTS

This film portrays the brutal urban realism of the Paris riots that took place about 10 years ago.

It is based in the Projects, a gritty inner city housing estate, made up of immigrant and ethnic diverse residents.

3 of these residents get caught up in the mayhem and the film follows them for 24 hours.

The film is a classic and is like a mix of Do the Right Thing and Taxi Driver, and you can see its influence on the new film This is England.

The HD element is negligible but a film like this does not need a 1080p picture for it to be good. It is perfect as it is, whether you are going to watch it on an old video tape, low definition or whatever.

i enjoyed the movie immensely, I can see why it is seen as a classic. But, wasn't very impressed by the HD transfer. Was the least clear HD -DVD I have seen yet, just looked grainy in parts, and not vivid and detailed as I'm used to now. Maybe this was because its shot in black and white, I'm not sure.

I really didn't get why people think this film is good. I found it utterly boring with a very thin plot, bad acting with quite frankly irratating characters and too long at only 90 mins. The ending was okay but overall this film sucks!
