Brief synopsis of The Contract

Ray Keene (Cusack), a father who wants to redeem himself in the eyes of his son, is trying to bring Cordell (Freeman), a world-class assassin to justice. All the while, he must protect his son and evade an assassin's team who are methodically hunting them down in the wilderness.

Rated - 2 starsA waste of talent

This was very much a let down. Why on earth would two of todays most watchable actors agree to be in this? they are completely let down by a plot that is so weak it just doesn't hold up. We have every cliche in the business, so much so that it actually would have worked better as a parody. I hate giving low rating to a film with Cusack in, he is so much better than this, Freeman is miscast, and his little crew are about as fearful as the Stooges.

Rated - 1 starsOne contract too far...

It has the names, ever excellent Morgan Freeman and John Cusack, that lead you to expect something reasonable will be on the table in this Contract, but the names are about as far as it gets. It is pretty much a run of the mill film, that has a definate made for TV quality about it. There is little in the acting or the plot to rescue this from being something you might give up on after half an hour. Not really recommended.

although this is a good atempt to remake the old lost-in-the-woods-being-chased-by-killers genre the fact is that you can pretty much tell the ending within about 20 mins. There are a couple of good twists and an excellent cast in Morgan Freeman and John Cusack, so if you are looking for a sunday night time passer this is still a good call.

The two leads drew me into seeing this. I wish I hadn't bothered. That's 90 minutes of my life I am never getting back. Freeman phones it in and JC just looks faintly embarrassed throughout. I only watched it last night and already I have forgotten the plot. All I do recall is that it was laughable. John, Morgan I hope the paycheck was good, coz this isn't one they'll be showing on your tribute reel.

Rated - 2 starsEven if you are a John Cusack fan, you won’t miss out

DanaK from London , 28/08/2007

If you want to enjoy this film, turn all the lights in the room off, to enhance the atmosphere of the chase in the stormy forest. It worked for me ;-) The only highlight in this film is Morgan Freeman, he portrays a character (such as R.De Niro in Heat) an assassin with decency and you end up liking him. John Cusack plays a widower teacher and baseball/basketball coach Ray Keene who takes his teenage son Chris to hike and camp in the woods to increase their bonds. I won’t disclose any more, in case you decide to watch it. I found this thriller far too predictable to recommend it. I have also forgot the ending within 2 weeks of watching it, had to remind myself to write this review. If you want to watch chasing thriller get Shooter with Mark Wahlberg instead. Even if you are a John Cusack fan like myself, you won’t miss out if you skip this movie. I gave it 2 stars because the supporting characters and cast were really and mean really weak.

Poorly scripted and directed, only saved by the normal good performances from Morgan Freeman and John Cusack.
