Brief synopsis of 12:08 East Of Bucharest

December 22. It's been 16 years since the Revolution and Christmas is approaching. Pisconi, an old retiree, is preparing to spend another lonely Christmas. Manescu, a history teacher, doesn't want to lose his entire salary to pay his debts. Jderescu, the owner of the local TV station, doesn't seem very interested in vacation. With Piscoci and Manescu's help, he wants to find an answer to a 16-year-old question: "Did a revolution really take place in their city?"

Rated - 3 starsMy opinions of the film

Having lived in Romania for over 7 years, the film was interesting. I came across several people who had done well through 'The Party', but were very shy to go into detail about the past. There were also some who boasted about their so-called involvement in the 'Revolution', although I think that uprising is a more appropriate word. Therefore, the film is very close to the mark in its portrayal of the characters you come across in real life. However, I do feel that it probably seems quite boring to anyone who has not been to Romania, hence the 3-star rating.

I found this low budget Romanian film to be particuarly tedious and totally unfunny. The bulk of this rather short film is situated in a small town TV studio where several participants reminisce about their role in the removal of Ceaucescu sixteen years previously. Was it a revolution or not ? Was a drunken history teacher in the town square or not ? Who cares. The film is set against a backdrop of a drab, run down Romanian townscape and all of the actors are equally drab and they look bored throughout. "12.08" is far from riveting viewing to say the least and the sheer monotony of watching it left me somewhat stunned.

Rated - 3 starsRomanian Humour

Ok. The story builds itself around a tv programme about the revolution in Romania in 89. It is a small, observational comedy. There is no slap stick and I think some of the jokes probably meant more to Romanians.

It is well acted, and the interpaly between the characters is neatly done, but the story was somewhat underdeveloped leaving me to guess what was happening at points.
