It was Norman Mailer who suggested NASA should have sent a poet up to the moon instead of a pilot. (You can be sure he had himself in mind.) Only a wordsmith could have conveyed the awe and import... read more »

Rated - 4 starsA treat

What a treat it was to watch 'In the Shadow of the Moon'... not because I'm a space junkie, or anything like that; rather, experiencing the awe and wonder held by the men of the Apollo programme 40 years after one of mankind's greatest accomplishments is moving. It's wonderful to see 75 year old Alan Bean acting like a kid in a candy store as he recalls not only his own moonshot, but also the respect he had (has) for all the people involved in the programme.

It's a shame Neil Armstrong declined to participate in this, but the film doesn't suffer from a lack of great stories as a result.

I (vaguely) remember watching the moon broadcast on the TV as a 3 year old with my family. Of course I had no idea what I was watching and what all the fuss was about, but the fact that I saw again the same footage from that distant recollection made for a nice walk down memory lane.

There are some wonderful moments in this DVD (even for someone like myself who thinks he's seen every bit of footage there is to offer) like the lift off and stage separations of the Saturn 5 rocket where the footage keeps going and you see the earth come into shot like a scene from 2001: A space Odyssey. Wonderful music and commentary place you in the time.

DVD also contains an hour long extra documentary fleshing out the Gemini missions and the ill fated Apollo 13 mission, obviously extra footage from the main documentary.

Only two gripes: Shame there's no new Neil Armstrong interview to go alongside Aldrin and Collins. He's reported a recluse these days and his absence is noticable as it would have been interesting to hear HIS opinion of the moon landing!. Also all the footage is in 4:3 (possibly to preserve the original aspect ratio) would have been nice to have the footage fill the widescreen TV.

Small points in an otherwise truly awe inspiring and emotional adventure. They had the right stuff!

“No more heroes”? That may be true of today but the men featured in this programme have certainly earned that label. This is a wonderful, informative programme with great archive film and wonderful interview commentary from the astronauts themselves. These men speak with great eloquence about the extraordinary things they experienced: things that, clearly, humbled even them, They are modest but impassioned, ambitious but willing to work very hard to achieve their goals. I can think of no better role models for the current and future generations.

Most of the time Hollywood's product is lightweight or pretty disposable. This is the DVD that is the exception. If you are around my age (50+), and can remember these events as they transpired, or whether this is all new to you, you do need to see this film. Beautifully constructed and great entertainment as the welcome bonus ball. The subliminal is the educational undercurrent that runs in parallel with the overall experience, without patronising the younger viewer. Absolutely essential.

This film would have been good, if there had been some recognition or even mention by those who made the film, for the hero, Niel Armstrong.
