Brief synopsis of There Will Be Blood

A brutal, bloody, and gripping saga of obsession, corruption, and poisonous greed; Paul Thomas Anderson's Award Winning There Will Be Blood is a masterly, unwavering inspection of a consummately evil man whose trailblazing spirit is equalled only by his murderous ambition.

In the dying years of the nineteenth century Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis), a struggling silver miner, realises that true wealth lies in oil extraction. Driven by a passionate hatred for others and an intense psychological need to see competitors fail, he heads for the oil-rich land of California in a bid to manipulate and exploit the landowners of dust-worn Little Boston in to selling him their properties. Forefront of the town is self-styled `faith healer' Eli Sunday (Paul Dano) who is structuring his own sinister plan to funnel the residents' impending wealth into his self-founded church. As Plainview's empire expands, so does his obsession with the intrinsic value of power and he becomes increasingly irascible and paranoid along the way. What follows is a vindictive, ruthless, and violent chain of events as Plainview fails to deliver on promises as he pits himself against the town's perturbed and unstable charismatic teenage preacher.

In addition to stunning visuals and an exceptional, captivating score from accomplished composer (and Radiohead guitarist) Jonny Greenwood, director Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia) owes his best work to date to the incredible Academy Award winning performance as Plainview by Daniel Day-Lewis and the staggering portrayal of Eli Sunday by Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine). Bearing similarities to Citizen Kane and Giant, There Will Be Blood is an intelligent, thought-provoking, and powerfully-eccentric epic masterpiece that is as enchanting as it is timeless.

In the beginning there is darkness. And in the darkness, a man with a pickaxe claws at the earth as if he's looking for the way back in. He grunts from such heavy labour but he keeps right on... read more »

Rated - 5 starsDaniel Day Lewis extravaganza

Katherine from London [Highly rated reviewer] , 04/02/2008

I have been a big fan of Daniel Day-Lewis for a very long time. In terms of acting ability he must be classed as amongst the top echelon of those people without peer. This performance is totally enthralling and the only downside is that as with a film such as Gangs of New York, the rest of the cast simply cannot match the sheer intensity of who they are performing with. This film is excellent to watch, exciting and interesting all the way through and I would recommend it to anyone.

I also saw this last night and long winded is right. I think there is starting to be an element of the emperor's new clothes around DDL with every film he is in automaically feted as a masterpiece when in actuality it is only his performance that stands any scrutiny at all. This film could easily have an hour cut from it and still tell the story. In retrospect long winded is not correct boring is the word just ask my brother, he fell asleep.

Rated - 1 starsIt's no masterpeice

Ok i was really really looking forward to seeing this having read the reviews and all, but to say it was a disapointment would be an understatement to say the least. The basic story was good, the acting was pretty good (especially daniel day lewis), however the dialogue and the directing were awful. The characters all seem awkward and while there are a few bits of engaging and intersting dialogue they are few and far between.

Now when i say the directing was awful i mean that the pace of the film was all wrong its like the film keeps stalling. Just as it gets exciting we drop into a 20 minuite long boring and awkward dialogue that is irrelevent to the film. It's almost like they are trying to hide the intresting bits of the film so you have to work as hard as daniel plainview to find the gold/oil.

In other words if you need a cure for insomnia look no further, if you want an engaging intresting film i would keep looking.

Rated - 4 starsVery good but not a classic

danielpetry from Stratford , 17/02/2008

This is certainly an excellent, intelligent piece of filmmaking, unnerving and dark in places with skilful contrast of moods. However comparisons to e.g. Citizen Kane and The Godfather do not in my opinion hold, as it is not as dense and complex as these two, especially Citizen Kane. Day-Lewis' performance is very good, imagery and symbolism is powerful but the message is not developed as deeply as needed to put this in a list of 'great' movies. Definitely see this, but do not expect it to live up to the stratospheric hype that some critics have given it.

Rated - 4 starsThis is madness! THIS IS OIL!

Superwill70 Superwill70 from Twickenham, England [Highly rated reviewer] , 04/04/2008

A film of epic disturbance, gripping discomfort, and the most twisted characters in a film for quite some time. There Will Be Blood goes well beyond my expectations from the trailer. Admittedly a slow film - of the [few] bad reviews i have read about it, most complained about the length. But can you put a time on madness?

The film delves in sin, madness, greed and family. In parts it is strange and bafflng, but strangely brilliant, captivating, and disturbingly raw and realistic. A sinister score also enhances the dark horror that this film brings to the oil industry of that time.

I, like many other reviews, praise Daniel Day-Lewis's acting for taking this film from a long story, to a twisted tale of madness and corruption. Alongside other well acted characters, the film carries, and although may be long and slow paced, draws to what is an ending almost as passionate [in terms of cinematic beauty] as '2001:...'.

Its a must see, to say the least. I can't garuntee you will love it. Its certainly not a casual night in film. Get in the mood and experience the depths of human desire, emotion and greed in this brilliant film which will take you to places beyond the high octane car chases, gun fights and action that most entertainment films rely on these days.
