Brief synopsis of Cranford - Complete BBC Series

This is the DVD of the lavish BBC costume drama, Cranford, based on three of Elizabeth Gaskell's novels including Cranford itself. The cast boasts some of Britain's best-loved and most experienced actresses, including Dame Judi Dench, Dame Eileen Atkins, Imelda Staunton and Francesca Annis. The five-part drama series tells the witty and poignant story of the small absurdities and major tragedies in the lives of the people of Cranford, as they are besieged by forces that they can't withstand. Cranford in the 1840s is a small northern English town on the cusp of change. Things are on the move. The railway is pushing its way relentlessly towards the town from Manchester, bringing fears of migrant workers and the breakdown of law and order. The arrival of handsome new doctor, Frank Harrison (Simon Woods) from London causes a stir; not only because of his revolutionary medical methods, but also because of the effect he has on many of the ladies' hearts in the town. Judi Dench plays Miss Matty Jenkyns, whose hopes and rebellious spirit are crushed when she was forced as a young woman to give up Mr Holbrook (Michael Gambon), the man she loved.

Set in 1842/1843, this adaption of Elizabeth Gaskells 3 novels, is located in and around the village of Cranford in Cheshire. The village has refined ladies in abundance, mostly single or widowed and in the first episode, it becomes obvious that they don't much like change. The local landowner, Lady Ludlow, runs her stately home with a firm hand ably assisted by Mr Carter. On the outskirts of the village is a family who's main breadwinner is a poacher and who's eldest son, Harry, has ambitions to read. Into this very isolated community comes a young Doctor, fresh from medical school in London, Mary Smith who has left her family in Manchester to lodge with Miss Deborah and Miss Matty Jenkyns and Captain Brown and his two daughters, who unbenowns to the villagers have a secret. agenda. So, here we have a superb drama, wonderful costumes, outstanding performances from everybody without exception, comedy and tragedy. For the lovers of period drama this is a must see.

Rated - 4 starsTV series + (on disc 2) half hour 'Making of' bonus

Wife of customer from Wales [Highly rated reviewer] , 15/02/2008

I saw & enjoyed this whole series on TV recently: I rented it on DVD just for the half-hour bonus 'Making of' feature, of which I'd seen a trailer on another website.

I didn't know which disc would contain the bonus, so I rented both; but other people in the same situation might appreciate knowing that the bonus is on DISC 2. (Disc 1 contains only episodes already seen on TV.)

(By the way, I've given Cranford 4 stars not 5, because although star-studded & mostly very enjoyable, the series showed a couple of what I considered unnecessarily gory scenes. Also some scenes seemed over-farcical. And some characters have had their names &/or storylines changed from those written by Mrs Gaskell in the 3 pieces on which the series was based. I'm a keen reader of Mrs Gaskell.)

I am not usually a fan of Victoriana. Or Judi Dench.

However. Witty. Extremely well acted, especially by Judi Dench. Brilliant production values. All without losing the politics of Elisabeth Gaskell along the way.

Spellbinding and unmissable.

As I said . . .

BLIMEY!

To my mind this is simply the best period drama the BBC has ever done, I just couldn't find a single fault with it at all. All of the other reviews have said everything there is to say. I know that English as a spoken language is constantly changing but in Cranford it was a delight to listen to. As for the casting/acting, absolute perfection even down to the cat in episode 1!! I persuaded a very reluctant grandchild to watch this with me and after 15 minutes she was totally engrossed in it, this from someone who considers anything not the latest thing as very uncool. Well done BBC, this time you have done something to deserve the licence fee.

This has been a wonderful 5 star series. it is by by far the best thing I have seen on TV during 2007. It is touched with both humour and drama. Viewing the series has prompted me to hire other Elizabeth Gaskell titles available from tescodvdrental; NORTH AND SOUTH and WIVES AND DAUGHTERS.
