Brief synopsis of The Hottest State

Days before his 21st birthday, William (Mark Webber), an actor, meets and quickly falls madly in love with Sara (Catalina Sandino Moreno), a seductive yet elusive singer/songwriter. The film follows William from a Lower East Side tenement to a Mexican hotel room, to a snowbound weekend in Connecticut, to a sweltering homecoming in the hottest state of all - Texas - in the pursuit of Sara. His stubborn and sweetly innocent quest to find someone who loves him as much as he loves her may not lead to happiness, but surely leads to newfound maturity.

Based on Ethan Hawke's brilliant novel, The Hottest State gives a beautiful insight into the experiences of first love from a 20 yr old male perspective. Don't worry, it's not a 'chick flick' or over-the-top mushy. Genuine, honest and confusing like most of our first experiences of love, its not a movie filled with lots of twists and turns and won't have you on the edge of your seat. BUT it's still worth a look.

Thought this film was beautifully made and acted. A tender and real depiction of young love. Well worth a watch.

Having read the book this is not what I was expecting. . .

I recall the book as being engaging however, the film is anything but!

The lead actor was not convincing and I did not believe him in the role. It would have been better had Ethan Hawke made the film ten years ago when he could have still got away with acting in that role. Now that he is older he played the role of the father to the main character which is a bit sad really.

After about 40 minutes of childish and peurile nonsense I managed to fall asleep and my partner was begging me to switch off the film as he was so bored!

The fact that the two main characters are so childish and charmles spoils the film. I am not sure what happened between the translation of the book to the screen (all orchestrated by Mr Hawke himself - who should know what he's doing as it is his baby), but this just did not work for me.
