Brief synopsis of Sense and Sensibility

From acclaimed writer Andrew Davies comes this enchanting new adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel about love and marriage. Marianne Dashwood wears her heart on her sleeve when she falls in love with the charming but unsuitable John Willoughby, ignoring her sister Elinor's warning that her impulsive behaviour leaves her open to gossip and innuendo. Elinor, sensitive to social convention, struggles to conceal her own romantic disappointment, even from those closest to her. Will the sisters learn that sense must mix with sensibility if they are to find personal happiness in a society where status and money govern the rules of love?

The strength of the story is such that any film version is going to be adequate, but this one excels due to an excellent cast and a great production team. The young age of the actors playing Elinor and Marianne -closer to the age of the girls in the novel - enhances their roles. Elinor, in particular, conveys more in one glance than many actors would in an entire speech. Subtle, moving, passionate.

Adaptions of Jane Austen's works are incredibly difficult to do, as a number of appalling efforts sadly testify (e.g. Billie Pipers' Fanny Price).

But this one is excellent. Once you get used to the idea that no screen adaption can capture the full richness, subtlety and humour of the book, then you can get a lot out of adaptions as good as this one.

Most entertaining, highly enjoyable, and I heartily recommend it.

Rated - 5 starsOutstanding!

I absolutely loved this drama - I have not read the book, but had seen the film starring Emma Thompson, which I thought was great, but this BBC version is even greater! It goes into alot more depth, and emotion. I must admit I was in tears a couple of times, its so moving and powerful. The cast were fabulous, all in all I would definately recommend this!

I will most certainly be buying the dvd.

This, the BBC series, is so different from the excellent recent film version, it is well worth watching if only to see how differently the classic Jane Austin novel has been interpreted. The story in the film version unfolds more quickly and misses many of the nuances which the extra hour of the BBC series affords the viewer. Do yourself a favour and watch both the film and the BBC series: both are excellent, both very different.
