Brief synopsis of Same Time, Next Year

Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn glow on screen as two people who find long, enduring love with each other despite being married to other people. A fateful meeting at a California inn leads the seemingly mismatched pair into 26-year-long affair in which they meet for only one weekend every year. Altered by the global events of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, skillfully displayed with film stills from the time, and by their personal challenges, the couple grows and changes as the years roll by but never loses the awe that they have found their true soul mates. The dissimilar and quirky characters of the two lovers drive the film, and both Burstyn and Alda soar while retaining the clay feet that make their characters so believable. SAME TIME, NEXT YEAR will enchant viewers seeking an extraordinary glimpse of the reality of romance.

This is one of those films that you don't want to end. The characters are real and you get caught up in the romance of the couple who meet up each year at the same hotel for an affair which continues for over 25 years.

This is a great film to watch on a cosy evening in with someone special. Highly recommended

This film is a real classic in the U.S. People hunt all over the California coast attempting to find the hotel where the two characters meet yearly to share just a bit of their lives. And the hotel does exist! Alda and Burstyn shine as two ordinary people who have an extraordinary relationship which lasts for years. They share everything, except the same last name. I think part of the appeal of this film is that people yearn for such friends and lovers but rarely have the opportunity to meet them in real life or have this type of rendezvous. We are voyeurs into the characters' lives.

I watched this many years and wasn't disappointed with this showing. Good gentle film would be great February 14th present. Quality throughout the film, although the ending of this DVD wasn't want I remembered, but that could just be me! Have a meal, a few drinks and watch this film, 4 stars.
