Brief synopsis of 30 Days of Night - BLU-RAY Version

For 30 days every winter, the isolated town of Barrow, Alaska is plunged into a state of complete darkness. It's a bitter time when most of the inhabitants head south. This winter, a mysterious group of strangers appear: bloood-thirsty vampires, ready to take advantage of the uninterrupted darkness to feed on the residents remaining in town. Barrow's Sheriff Eben (Josh Hartnett), his estranged wife, Stella (Melissa George), and an ever-shrinking group of survivors must do anything they can to last until daylight in 30 Days of Night.

Rated - 3 starsGood visuals, poor plot.

It seems like an all too obvious choice to place a group of rampaging vampires in an Alaskan township that during mid winter, experiences 30 days of night. What they didn't tell us is how they got there and what they did after they left. Which is disappointing. In the opening scene there is an indication that they may have arrived by a ship, although nothing is explained.

So the vampires rampage and kill everyone in sight, with the exception of a few survivors who have to figure out how to get through the dark days without becoming vamp snacks. The only thing that saves this movie from being rather bad is some great acting and excellent visuals....aside from that theres really nothing else to it unfortunately. But hey, grab some popcorn and enjoy for what it is...a vampire flick with a modern twist.

30 days of night is the most original vampire movie to come out in years.but a very confusing story.you never find out were the vampires came from or were they went at the end (the ones who survive) saying that the acting is first class, and the cold alaska landscape is stunning.with great special effects this movie is a must see.a great movie not to be missed.

Rated - 4 starsGood Vampire Movie

I enjoyed this film. It was a vampire movie with a plot. In parts it was a little bit typical but the acting was good. Probably the best vampire movie in a few years and yes why haven't they discovered the towns in Alaska with30 days of night before?

Good cast & very well acted, great visiuals, especially on blu-ray, great special effects & vampires were origional & pretty scary.

Only real let down is that they could have extended the story line a bit more to include a bit of history about the vampires & where they went.

This film has an interesting plot and quite decently freakish vampires. However it is let down by having seemingly suicidal 'survivors' and by not having any outstanding action set pieces.

The leader of the vampires is done very well. With a chilling soulless menace but also with a sort of injured dignity that humans should have dared to force them into the shadows.

The rest of the vampires are pretty freakish and quite effective at gving you the chills.

The human survivors are a pretty good depiction of a random bunch of people, but frankly half of them seem to have a deathwish, doing the most idiotic things that you really don't care if they do die.

The action scenes throughout are either completely cliched or just a bit unimpressive. There was only one bit I really started grinning, you'll know it when you see it, it involved a chainsaw on a JCB.

Overall, the film is alright, the acting is ok, the lead actors are pretty good to be fair. It could have been a bit more exciting than it was though. Not much really happened in it.

As for the blu-ray. Very good. The HD picture was superb, and certain scenes really are impressive. One scene of a guy holding an axe standing in a snow filled playground, with the headless body of a vampire stuck upright in the chains of a swing, blood spattered around the corpse, was pretty amazing and is stuck in my mind.

The sound also excellent. 5.1 or HD-DTS. The HD-DTS was very good and noticeably better than the 5.1, but be aware the film is generally quite quiet, being more of a suspense film rather than action.
