It's true that Stanely Baxter is hardly politically correct according to modern idiom and this is probably why it is rare to see his work on TV, but it is well constructed and very funny!

Stanley Baxter used to be a real favourite. Thought I would reaquaint but was so disappointed. Cancelled the second disc so as to keep what left of memories in tact. Could not get over how un PC TV used to be!

It's great to see Stanley Baxter's work get a fresh airing on DVD. His specials for LWT from 1973 to 1982 were always looked forward to by the public. Sadly, his bosses eventually decided that they were simply too expensive to make, as each contained carefully crafted and detailed parodies of film and TV. Their sheer scope and attention to detail was striking, but there was often a satirical bite to his work as well (most of which was penned by writer Ken Hoare). The send ups of 70's news show Nationwide are particularly funny, and show off Baxter's incredible talent for accents. Some of the cultural references are lodged firmly in the 70's, but there's still plenty here to amuse new viewers. Fans of the golden days of Hollywood will particularly find much to enjoy. We'll probably not see one performer given such artistic freedom on television again, so these programmes should be all the more cherished. If you've not seen any of Baxter's work before, this is a great place to start.
